Who Is Disha Ravi

Disha is one of the founders of Fridays For Future (FFF) India, the home branch of the international movement of school students who skip Friday's classes to participate in demonstrations demanding action from political leaders to mitigate the effects of climate change.

Disha is a familiar face at cleanups and tree-planting drives in Bengaluru. Her arrest has come as a shock to friends and family members for whom she is a passionate climate campaigner.

“Her motivation stemmed from watching her grandparents, who are farmers, struggle with the effects of climate change. A documentary on the meat industry shown at her college also promoted her to take up environmental activism”, her friends told the media after her arrest.

Climate activism in India picked up after 2018 when Swedish student Greta Thunberg shot to fame by holding strikes in schools across the countries for the climate movement.

Thunberg inspired scores of youngsters who started organizing similar protests in different parts of the world. In India, Disha Ravi, Licypriya Kangujam, Ridhima Pandey, and several other youth activists are leading the public fight against climate change and arguing for climate action.

Disha is a BBA graduate from Mount Carmel College in Bengaluru. She works with a vegan start-up. She was featured in an article by the British Vogue magazine on four activists of colour who highlight the climate crisis. She writes columns on leading news portals.

As per The News Minute report, “Disha, who lives with her mother, is the sole beard winner in the family and was looking for part-time work in the evening that means her pay was not enough.”
